The idea for the Kids Repair Program began in 1995 when Curt "Grandad" Eure was working along side area youngsters to beautify their neighborhood. Through conversation, "Grandad" discovered that kids were losing their bikes to theft and neglect. "Grandad" wanted to teach children responsibility through bike ownership, safely and maintenance. The bike program was developed from his idea. "Grandad's" efforts began by sharing his funds, seeking donations of bicycles and finding support from people who were as committed as he was. Soon area children were repairing bikes, learning safety and providing information about the program to other neighborhood children. A Federal grant provided initial program funding and "Grandad" was asked to represent the North-Side Neighborhood as the program coordinator. The bike program was then formulized as a 501(c)(3) organization. Area residents, police, clergy and city officials observed the positive changes in the neighborhood and the enthusiasm of the children. The community police officer's held a picnic for the entire neighborhood and everyone celebrated the achievement-the pride of accomplishment. The Lansing Police Department began donating bicycles and bike helmets to the project. The Lansing City Council have been generous in their support of the program. A grant was received from the Mayor's office, equipment was purchased and more children were recruited. Federal Funding was not renewed for neighborhood project and the rental space was lost. In 1998, by networking with other area agencies, "Grandad" was able to relocate the bike program to its present location at Impression 5 Science Center, The program has been explanted to reach all interested Lansing area children from age 9 to 17. The Mayor's Neighborhood grant, donations from area businesses and individuals, all help to support the project.
