ALWAYS wear an approved safely helmet. Wearing helmets reduces head injuries by 85%. OBEY all traffic laws, signs, road markings and lights. Many Michigan traffic laws apply to bike riders as well. USE hand signals when making turns. Drivers need clear signals regarding your intentions when you turn or stop your bike in traffic. NEVER ride against traffic. Ride on the right-hand side of road with the flow of traffic. Use bike paths or sidewalks when available. NEVER ride at night without rear reflectors or tail lights, headlights and reflective clothing. ALWAYS walk your bike across intersections in heavy traffic. Use pedestrian crosswalks if available. Always SECURE loose items in a carrier or backpack. Keep both hands on your handlebars. Never carry anything with your hands. Avoid any clothing which may catch in the bikes' moving parts. Light or bright-colored clothing is more visible. NEVER allow friends to ride double with you or carry heavy loads which may impair your ability to control the bike. REGISTER your bike with the City of Lansing to protect it from theft and make it easier for law officers to recover it for you. You can register your bike on the internet at The City of Lansing bike registry.
