Meeting Announcement 1/27/2010

Several of our members attended the last Kindergarten Steering Committee meeting.  Thank you to all of you who were able to attend.  At that meeting several people had requested that we now hold the meeting on January 27th for Transition to be able to continue discussing our Joint PD.  So we will now be meeting on January 27th from 3:45-5:00 at the Harley Franks Early Childhood Center.   We could really use some help from Kindergarten Steering Committee members at this meeting, so all Steering committee members are invited.  Thank you very much and hope to see you all there.

FYI- More info on our joint meeting with the Kindergarten Steering Committee from Camela Diaz

Good Morning Everyone,

The kindergarten steering committee was discussing our March 9 PD date,
due to the fact that all 2nd-8th teachers will be involved in science
training, and we thought that perhaps a joint PD for preK, K and 1
teachers might be nice. We discussed what we thought would be
productive and beneficial training for teachers in these grades across
programs and schools. We brainstormed some ideas, but would like your
input.

On December 16, the K transition committee will be meeting and that
group includes Ingham ISD staff who we are hoping we may be able to
partner with for this PD. Therefore, please get your thoughts and ideas
to me prior to that time so that I can share your thoughts at that
time.

If any of the buildings have already planned PD for their prek, k
and/or 1 teachers, please also let me know that.

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback.

Minutes from the 2/11/09 Kindergarten Transition Meeting

Attending: Deb Hill, Christina Lambert, Camela Diaz, and Mischele McManus

Discussion focused on the March 10 professional development day. A few suggestions were made for the registration flyer. Mischele will update and send out.

Camela will clear with LSD and get this offering on Kalpa. The registration deadline is Tuesday, March 3. LSD staff will register through Kalpa, all others will register with LaVera Fish at IISD. Camela will get the Kalpa list to Mischele by Friday, March 6.

The finalized agenda for the day is:

7:30 – 8     Registration, continental breakfast, opening activity (work on essential pieces of social-emotional developmental continuum, instructions will be on overhead)

8 – 8:15     Welcome, description of agenda, purpose and goals for the day, instructions for next activity

8:15 – 8:30 Participants will discuss and write s-e concerns/questions for panel

8:30 – 9:30 Dan Hodgins: Children Who Take You to the Ends of Your Rope!

9:30 – 10        Small group discussion (participants will change tables now?): In a small group, each person think of an issue or concern you have in your classroom. Decide who will go first. That person has one minute to describe issue. All others have two minutes to brainstorm ideas to help. Rotate through all group members. Facilitators will reference materials in folders.

10 – 10:45        Panel (includes Barry Kaufman, Laura Spees, Laurie Linscott, and possibly Shari Person (sp?)) will respond to questions gathered at beginning.

10:45 – 11        Wrap-up and evaluation

A few questions were discussed without conclusion:

  • Is it possible to invite a few vendors to display books that are appropriate for children and adults on this topic? Are there regulations from the ISD or LSD regarding vendors?
  • Has anyone confirmed that Laurie Linscott will be on panel?
  • We would like to have one host or hostess for the day who would do both the welcome and conclusion and perhaps guide the transitions between parts of the agenda. We suggested Michelle Nicholson.
  • What is the capacity for the training?
  • What is cost of keynote speaker and who will pay for him, food, copying of materials, folders, other materials?
  • How many table facilitators will there be and who will they be?

A few other ideas were brought up:

  • We should meet with or somehow communicate with the table facilitators to make sure they understand their role and the materials available.
  • We should also communicate with the panel members for the same reasons and to ask if they have materials they suggest be included.

Mischele and Deb will meet to work on the social-emotional continuum.

Kindergarten Transition Committee

MEETING NOTES - April 18, 2007

The Kindergarten Transition Committee met on April 18th and discussed the following items:

  • The Fall Transition Week for kindergarten students was approved by the Lansing School District.  The district values this transition opportunity for our students and parents.  The 2007-08 school year will be the 4th year for this strategy.
  • Committee members will meet with kindergarten steering committee members to review the materials used in the Fall Transition Week.
  • The committee is focusing on enrolling more potential kindergarten students before the school year ends.  Initially the group discussed hosting a large meeting at Harley Franks.  We would target the Head Start and MSRP parents who have not enrolled their child after crosschecking enrollments.  The emphasis changed to go to the sites where we might find the parents.
  • Head Start and Lansing School District collaborated to bring the district enrollment staff to the Head Start Field Day on May 4th at Hawk Island Park. Parents were informed to bring the necessary paperwork with them on May 4th and enrollment could be completed.  The actual enrollments were minimal that day, but information went out to others to emphasize the importance of enrollment so their child could visit the school and know where they would be attending in the fall.  We also learned that the majority of parents in attendance that day had their child enrolled.
  • The committee decided to arrange an enrollment opportunity at Peckham to meet with refugee families with interpreters.  Information for parents on kindergarten may be easier if we go where many of the parents work.

Next Meeting:  May 16, 2007 @ 3:45 p.m. at CACS.
