Car Seat Safety

Tips On Car Seat Safety For Your Child

As your family gets ready to travel during the upcoming holiday season, officials from Ingham County Great Start urge parents to make sure their children are safely secured in the car by adhering to the following tips:

• The back seat is the safest place for any child to ride.
• Infants should ride facing the vehicle’s rear until 1 year of age and 20 pounds in weight.
• Toddlers can ride forward-facing in a child restraint.
• Children under 8 or under 4'9" tall who have outgrown a car seat should ride in a booster seat (Michigan Law effective 7/1/08).
• Be sure to install the child restraint securely in the vehicle after carefully reading the instructions.
• Make sure the harness straps are snug on the child with no slack.
• Set a good example for your child by always using your seat belt.
