Parenting Awareness

Parent Education & Parent Awareness Month (March)

Raising children may be one of the most difficult tasks a parent can undertake. Unlike most jobs, there is no paycheck, little supervision, and no employee training program. Good parenting skills are most often acquired through on-the-job training.

Parenting Awareness Michigan (PAM) is a non-profit, statewide agency which provides education and resources that  focus on the importance of parenting and raising children who will grow up to be healthy, caring, and contributing citizens. It also assists in the development of parent networks and promotes locally planned events each March which recognize the importance of becoming an effective parent. Great Start Ingham phweb 2009

PAM offers the following tips for parents who want to improve their parenting skills.

  •  Show children love, concern, and respect at all times.
  •  Compliment your child on things that he/she does well.
  •   Introduce your child to books.
  •   Listen to, talk with, and spend time with your child.
  •   Set a positive example by what you say and do.
  •   Provide a safe place for your child to live and play.
  •   Establish basic rules and limits, and follow through with appropriate consequences.
  •   Tell your child “I love you” each and every day.
  •   Ask for parenting help when you need it.

As a parent in the Ingham County Great Start Collaborative, with a child under the age of 12, you provide the “real world” perspective on how programs really work, both for your child and for yourself. There are many places and other parents with whom we speak and share how great or worthless a particular program is. We, the Great Start Parent Coalition want to hear about these and explore ways to network with each other so that our kids and their families will benefit. The purpose of Great Start is to assure a coordinated system of community resources and supports to assist all Michigan families in providing a great start for their children from birth to age five.   We have many working groups and collaborations that make a difference – you might be surprised and we welcome your voice.

For more information and how to get involved contact MC Rothhorn at 517-203-8937 or inghamgscparents@yahoo.com  or visit the Ingham Great Start Collaborative website at www.CACVoices.org/birthtofive .
