Details on the role of a mentor

Youth Mentor

Goal of Position:                 

Help youth acquire or improve competencies in communication skills,  relationship building, group process, and school achievement.               

 

Job Description:                   

Empower youth to increse self-esteem gain life skills and engage in positive social activities. Provide opportunities for youth to be successful and feel  they are cared about.  Share your interests and values while participating in mutually enjoyable activities.

 

Time Required:           

Minimum of two hours weekly

 

Length of Commitment:      

Minimum of one year

 

Qualifications:                      

*Must genuinely care about today’s youth

*Must have good verbal and written communication skills

*Must have reliable transportation, current automobile insurance and valid driver’s license

*Must be 18 or over

 

Responsible To:                   

4-H Mentoring Program Coordinator

Michigan State University Extension, Ingham County

4-H Youth Mentoring Agent

 

Training and support will be provided.  Regular in-service training is offered.

 

*Exposure to 4-H, other youth programs, or experience working with youth is not a requirement.
