A smoke-free worksite policy should utilize existing personnel or administrative policies as a means of enforcement. The policy should be communicated in writing to all employees before implementation. Expectations and boundaries of where employees may smoke should be made clear. There are several local and national organizations available to assist with this implementation. <span> >When a business becomes smoke-free, some employees who smoke feel that it is a good time to quit. The Capital Area Partners for Smoking Cessation is a group of local agencies and organizations that have worked together to provide cessation programs and services to the community. If there are requests for cessation programs from employees who smoke, please share these resources, or have them call the Capital Area Partners for Smoking Cessation at (517) 887-4315.<span> >>>>Policy Development/Employee Relations><p> > ><span>American Lung Association >The American Lung Association offers a wide range of services on implementing a smoke-free policy tailored to a company's need. Services include free consultation to management teams, unions, and workers on proper steps to implement a smoke-free policy, presentations on health and safety related to second-hand smoke exposure, and training for supervisors to support employees when becoming a smoke-free workplace. Also available is a program for workers who are not ready to quit but want information on how to adjust to a smoke-free workplace. The cost of this "Coping Without Smoking" program varies depending on group size.<span> >Ingham County Health Department<strong> The Ingham County Health Department provides many free services: copies of the regulation, smoke-free signs, sample policies, enforcement strategies, and contact with similar businesses that have gone smoke free. Free consultation is also available, as is a packet entitled "Going Smoke-Free."><span> ><span>Michigan Department of Community Health, Tobacco Section The Michigan Department of Community Health, Tobacco Section provides assistance with clean air policy development and enforcement strategies. >>American Lung Association of Michigan The "Freedom From Smoking" program of the American Lung Association of Michigan is a seven-week group intervention that emphasizes behavioral change, positive health benefits, and maintenance strategies. The cost of the "Freedom From Smoking" program is $65 per participant. Trained facilitators are available. Active "Freedom From Smoking" Programs, Sparrow Hospital Sparrow Hospital currently offers regular "Freedom From Smoking" programs. Programs are offered at the Sparrow Professional Building, 2nd floor. The cost is $65. Call for schedule. ><span>Freedom from Smoking Facilitator Training An employee at your business may complete the facilitator training and implement the program as needed for groups at the worksite. A 1½-day facilitator training costs $100. Contact Jeff Williams at 484-4541 for Facilitator Training information or to contact trained facilitators. Ingham County Smoking Cessation Program Ingham County's Smoking Cessation Program provides individual cessation counseling and referral service. Nicotine replacement and prescription therapies are available to those who qualify. This program is free to all Ingham County residents. Michigan Laborers International Union of North America Members of the local 334, 355, 463, 465, 959, 998, 1075, 1076, 1098, 1191, and 1329 unions are eligible for smoking cessation assistance, including phone consultation and cessation materials specifically designed for the labor population. Nicotine Anonymous Nicotine Anonymous is a 12-step recovery model adapted from the 12 steps and traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous. Weekly meetings are held Mondays at 6:00 p.m. at the St. Lawrence Campus of Sparrow Hospital. Seventh-Day Adventist, Health and Temperance Department >The Seventh-Day Adventist Health and Temperance Department offers the "Breathe Free Stop Smoking Plan" that focuses on the physical and psychological issues of smoking. Designed for groups of 10-40, the program is comprised of nine 1½-hour sessions. The sessions include two informational meetings, followed by seven educational and motivational meetings. The cost is $25 per participant.<span> ><span>><span>Health Insurance Provider Coverage - Call the Number on Your Insurance Card >Most health insurance providers will assist patients trying to quit smoking. Call the number on your insurance card and ask what smoking cessation medications and therapies are covered. Some offer telephone support, and some will allow for over-the-counter nicotine replacement therapies when prescribed by your doctor. Coverage varies by plan.<span> Self-Help > ><span>American Cancer Society >The American Cancer Society offers community referral information, phone consultation, information regarding nicotine replacement and prescription therapies, and self-help materials. The program offers several options that can be tailored to the needs of individual worksites, including telephone interventions, and information and support concerning the use of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) and Zyban. The cost is approximately $190 per participant. Volume and prepaid discounts are available. >Personal Growth Technologies Smoking Cessation Program<strong> The Personal Growth Technologies Smoking Cessation Program is a "one-on-one" virtual reality audio program that creates a multi-sensory cessation intervention. The program comes on two digital compact discs or enhanced audiocassettes. On-site business promotion and marketing are included, along with group discounts. Single cost is $165 per person. >SMOKESTOPPERS<strong> Smokestoppers offers a variety of 12-month smoking cessation training programs that can be tailored to meet the needs of individual businesses. Program options include telephonic, internet-based, self-directed, and group meetings. Pricing varies depending on treatment options selected. Price ranges from $109-225 per participant.
