Take a tour of the 2003 BRFS

Public Health Advisory Committee

This presentation was delivered before the Public Health Advisory Committee of Ingham Regional Medical Center February 26, 2004 by Doak Bloss and Robert Glandon. The purpose of the presentation was to stimulate new thinking about the leading causes of premature death and preventable disease and injuries.

Increasingly it is understood that "Health is in Our Hands". However, that does not mean that individuals are to be blamed for their illnesses. Instead, we see that communities shape the beliefs and feelings of their members. Many of us already accept that Assets promote health in youth. But improved emotional well being and social capital have the same impact on all of us. We find that people living in low income communities have lower levels of emotional well being and less social capital, and at the same time are disproportinately affected by disease and injuries.
