We call it a "vox pop workshop" (vox pop is Latin for "voice of the
people," and it's also radio lingo for the type of pieces we'll be
putting together with the participants -- collages of man-on-the-street
responses to a particular question or idea). The participants will meet
us at WKAR at 10 am, we'll tour the station, then break out into
groups, ideally of three, and explain how the day will work. This is
how the day will work: we'll explain what a vox pop is, and play an
example. Then each group will get an equipment kit, and we'll go over
how the minidisc players work, how to hold a mic, etc. Then we'll
decide as a group what question or issue we want to explore, and we
decide where to go to talk to people. Then we go out, and the idea is
to let each person in each team have a turn using the equipment and
doing interviews. Once they feel like they've got an adequate amount of
tape (interviews and "nat sound,") we'll come back to WKAR, have some
lunch, and start putting the pieces together. Each team will write up
and voice up a little intro to their piece so they get a chance to get
in the studio, and get to learn how to use the same digital editing
software that we use. Then we burn CDs for everyone and call it a day.
We usually wrap up around 5.
So, in short: they'll get exposed to interviewing, using audio
equipment including minidisc recorders and microphones, writing for
radio, voicing, and using digital editing software.
Now, for housekeeping: We can probably handle about a dozen
participants, depending on how many mentors we get lined up. I'll give
you a firmer number once I get confirmation from them. As I think we
discussed before, we usually ask that the sponsoring organization get
lunch for the group and arrange to have it delivered to WKAR. I hope
that's not a problem. The only other thing I would ask you to provide
is enough blank CDs and envelopes/cases for each participant to get a
copy of their story.
Kendall, do you or any other organizers plan on attending the whole
day? I ask because we'll use you as team leaders if you are. Just let
me know if so and how many. I'll track down the mentors we'll have and
get that to you ASAP.
Let me know if you have any questions. -sth
